Preparation
Ordering a new mattress has never been easier, thanks to mattress-in-a-box options. This is when online retailers sell mattresses by compressing, boxing, and shipping them directly to your door. Currently, there are several companies that use this model, which is an extremely convenient alternative to shopping in stores.
“Bed-in-a-box became popular when manufactures figured out that foam can be compressed and roll-packed for easy shipping and online sales,” says Trisha Chamberlain, the owner of Mattress Mania in Las Vegas, Nev.
When choosing your foam type, keep in mind that the higher density per square foot, the more firm and durable each iteration is. Before you buy one of these products, Chamberlin suggests researching to see which type of foam will work best for your body type and preferred sleeping position—especially since you’re skipping that in-store test.
There are a few things to be on the lookout for during your search. “To find the best possible iteration, look for third-party validations and certifications like GOTS, GOLS, and Greenguard Gold when you shop,” says Jessica Hann, the vice president of brand marketing at Avocado Green Mattress. She says to find a company that will do a virtual try-on to help you find the right firmness and model for you.
