Whether you’re planning a cookout or watching the neighborhood fireworks with your nearest and dearest, the Fourth of July offers a prime opportunity to dress up your home with thematic red, white, and blue décor. One of the best ways to signal your patriotic spirit to others is by decking out your front porch with some classic motifs like stars and stripes—and by incorporating the colors of the American flag into your design.
“Porch decorations are a great way to show your patriotism,” says Kerrie Kelly, creative director of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. She notes that these displays illustrates an enthusiasm for our independence while simultaneously livening up the neighborhood, which she says is “especially true for areas that have block parties, parades, or just simply for passersby.”
When considering Fourth of July decorations for your own porch, Kelly says items like pillows, flags, and wreaths are great staples. “Depending on your setup, this could be one big flag, a string of flags, or smaller flags on a stick,” she says. “A wreath can be purchased at your favorite local shop, or you can make a fun family DIY-project out of it, truly showing off your personal style.” Give a subtle nod to the flag by welcoming guests to your home with this Pottery Barn Stars and Stripes Doormat ($29, potterybarn.com), for example.
