The recipe is actually quite simple. Once you combine all the dry ingredients, pour in a cup of beer and mix well to create your batter. Now the question comes up all the time as to what is the best beer to use for beer batter? To be honest, it’s not really a huge deal. In fact, a good old can of Budweiser or Miller will work just fine – and in some cases may be preferred. A lot of people like to use a good stout beer such as Guinness. Guinness adds a deeper flavor and color and almost a chocolaty taste. IPA beers, traditionally, don’t make the best beer batter and tend to be bitter. A good brown ale such as Newcastle can be a good beer for batter and add a hint of sweetness that works great for a number of beer battered foods. Feel free to experiment! You’ll want to make sure your oil gets hot enough. If it’s not hot enough the onion rings can come out too tough or even mushy. 365-375 degrees F is the perfect temperature for your oil.
