Custom upholstery, tailored window treatments, statement-making headboards—stylish details like these were once the domain of interior designers only. But thanks to a crop of new online companies—many eco-conscious and female-owned—you can create, click, and order personalized pieces without the showroom prices. Grab your vision board. The (fabric) options are endless.
To cover this built-in bench, above, with made-to-measure, custom-upholstered cushions, we looked to Stitchroom, which offers a slew of styles, fabrics, and color options—you supply your dimensions and check out. Note: If you don’t have an existing base, you can craft a simple wooden one like ours; here’s how.
Shop Now: Stitchroom “Andie” and “Skylar” Banquette Cushions, from $1,500 for a set; “Alex” 18" Throw Pillow in Arctic Blush Cotton Velvet, $75; and “Alex” `18" Throw Pillow in Mustard Knit Chenille, $70, stitchroom.com. CB2 Spindler Round Dining Table, $1,299, cb2.com. Noguchi Akari 16A Light Fixture, $500, noguchi.org. Another Country Pottery Series Pitcher, $65, anothercountry.com.
If anything needs a little special treatment, it’s your window treatments—the right size, style, and opacity are truly in the eye of the homeowner. To get the beauty above made, we logged on to Loom Decor, typed in our dimensions, and chose from more than 400 designer fabrics. (We went with the flat roman shade in Giaconda Black (from $146, loomdecor.com)). Your creation will arrive in one to six weeks, and if you’re feeling matchy, you can order lumbar pillows and duvet covers, too. For the pretty Belgian-linen drum lampshade, we visited Greige Textiles—it’s the 15-inch lampshade in the Hale pattern and Lipgloss colorway (from $400, greigetextiles.com)—which screen-prints and hand-assembles custom work and also makes pillows.
Shop Now: Simon Pierce Woodbury Lamp, $350, simonpearce.com. Portola Lime Wash Paint in Blondie, price dependent on quantity, portolapaints.com.
These companies also offer couture window coverings.
To turn your bedroom into a pulled-together dream, customize key items in simpatico colors and patterns, and set them against serene neutrals. We designed the headboard above—it’s the Art Deco Queen Headboard in Shibori ($619, theinside.com)—using a digital-print-on-demand process at The Inside, which offers hundreds of colors and prints, including collaborations with textile titans such as Scalamandré and Sheila Bridges. The company upholsters sofas, dining chairs, and ottomans, too. The window shade was created with Everhem; the lampshade with Greige Textiles; the bench is vintage.
Shop Now: Greige Textiles Round 18" Lampshade in Mer print in Indigo on Oatmeal, from $400, greigetextiles.com. Martha Stewart Rohan Organic-Cotton Pillowcases, from $129 for two cases and duvet, martha.com. West Elm European Flax Linen Quilt, $270, westelm.com. West Elm European Flax Linen Pillowcases in Natural Flax, $55 for two, westelm.com. West Elm Woven Kantha Lumbar-Pillow Cover, from $19.99, westelm.com.
