Preparation

It’s a common dilemma: You’re in-between wash days, but your curls start to feel limp and lackluster. Luckily, there’s an easy fix, and it’s one that doesn’t require hopping into the shower to wash your hair. Curl refreshing sprays hydrate coils, reinstating shine and definition. “A curl refreshing spray adds a bit of life back into your curls while also reducing frizz and enhancing softness,” says Jamila Powell, a hairstylist and the founder of Naturally Drenched. These sprays are typically packed with nourishing ingredients—such as shea butter, coconut oil, and aloe vera—and are simple to use. Start by spritzing these mists onto curls, notes Powell; then, use your palms to smooth coils and invigorate your roots to boost volume. Some people like to wet their hands before working in the product, she adds, since this can reduce frizz and result in a more even application.

You can also expect your bottle to last a long time, since you don’t have to use this product every day. Simply give coils a spritz when they start to droop: “Using it every day won’t cause any harm, but you would be adding excess product to your hair when you don’t necessarily have to,” notes Powell. To ensure the formula doesn’t intensify the problem, look for something lightweight, she adds, noting that you don’t need to source a specific spray based on your curl pattern, since formulas tend to be universal. “There are a ton of great products out there that will work on any type,” she explains. It’s all about testing a few options before landing on the formula that is best for you. Luckily, we have already done the legwork: Below, you will find several expert-approved curl refreshing sprays for all coil patterns.
